San Marcos Community
Nested in the hills north of San Diego County is the town of San Marcos, California. These fertile ground were discovered in 1797 and named Los Vallecitos de San Marcos (Little Valleys of Saint Mark) by Spanish settlers. It wasn’t until the late 1800’s that settlers began using the lands, producing wine and honey from the areas. After establishing local business including a post office, blacksmith and feed stores, San Marcos began dividing the land into tracts, attracting home-seekers. Rail service, telephones and public schools soon came to San Marcos.
The fertile hills and valleys of San Marcos gave way to dairies and poultry production in the mid 1900’s. Water from the Colorado river began flowing through in 1956, leading to a boost in population and small businesses still enjoyed today. Construction of Highway 78 gave commuters a route between San Marcos and Interstate 5 in Oceanside.
Home to Palomar Community College and CSU San Marcos, the city has made education a priority within its community, from grade school through college.
Its beautiful surrounding, golf courses, shopping and dining in Restaurant row has invited population surges, the hills of San Marcos have miles of trails for horseback riding and recreational activities.
